Greensville County was formed in 1781 and may have been named for Sir Richard Greensville, leader of the Roanoke Island settlement in 1585. It may also have been named in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, who marched through the county after the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
  
The area was first explored in 1670, but not settled until around 1710. The present courthouse was erected in the first area community, Hicksford, in 1787. In 1877, Hicksford merged with the neighboring town of Belfield
to become Emporia. The Hicksford Raid, a December 1864 skirmish that helped shorten
the Civil War, notably occurred within
Emporia's limits.
